How Estate Planning Attorneys Can Actually Win Online (Part 1)
The Foundation: Optimizing Your Web Presence
Estate planning isn’t like personal injury or criminal defense. Nobody wakes up in a panic needing an estate planning attorney today. It’s all about planning—quietly, thoughtfully, years before anything happens. For a long time, the best firms grew almost entirely through referrals and word of mouth. Word of mouth is still important, but people are starting to ask Google questions long before they ask friends and family. They’re Googling “estate planning attorney near me,” “will vs. trust differences,” or “how to avoid probate in New Jersey.” If you’re not showing up in these searches, you’re invisible.
The Real Challenge Here
Unlike crisis-driven practices, estate planning clients aren’t in emergency mode. They’re thinking long-term, often feeling a mix of anxiety and responsibility. They want someone who feels steady and knowledgeable. Your marketing needs to reflect that. It has to focus on education, patience, and building trust over time.
What We’re Actually Trying to Do
This blog post is the first part of a three-part series on what it really takes for estate planning firms to build a strong online presence and keep the phone ringing—no fluff—just the stuff that moves the needle. This post will focus on optimizing your web presence.
Your Website Is Like a Real Partner
Your site is working for you around the clock—it’s the first (and sometimes only) impression before someone calls. Make it count.
Write for People Who Are Skimming, Because They All Are
Estate planning stuff overwhelms people. They land on your page feeling unsure and emotional. Don’t make them hunt for answers. Use big, clear headings, bold key points, short paragraphs, bullet lists—guide their eyes down the page fast. Most folks scan in that classic F-pattern in seconds.
Big mistake: sending Google Ads traffic straight to your homepage. Don’t do it. Build dedicated landing pages instead.
When someone searches for “probate lawyer,” send them to a dedicated landing page for that service. Provide helpful information and explain why you excel at helping people with this issue. Create a compelling call to action and an easy way to reach out, either via a form or a phone number.
Also, make sure your page is solid on mobile. More than half of your visitors will visit your site on their phones. If the elements of the page aren’t in the correct order, you can lose their interest.
Own Your Local Turf with SEO
If someone wants to meet with an estate planning attorney, in most cases, they are not driving an hour in a car to see you. They want someone in their “backyard,” particularly if there are several meetings involved. There are a few things you can do to help with your local SEO.
First, give your Google Business Profile some love. Consider it a second website. Keep it active with new reviews, new content, and photos, and be sure to respond to reviews, both positive and negative, as well as any FAQs on the page. Being active on your Google Business Profile will build trust with potential clients.
Another SEO tactic you can use is create real city/county pages around your services. For example, “Estate Planning Attorney in Red Bank,” “Probate Help Serving Monmouth County.” Don’t just copy-paste your main services page—make each one unique with local flavor, nearby landmarks, or specific issues like local-related property concerns.
Be smart about geography. Keep your radius tight; cost-per-lead skyrockets once you stretch too far. Focus on where you actually practice.
That’s the foundation. Get this solid, and the paid ads and content in Parts 2 and 3 will actually pay off instead of just burning cash.
